So, I was knitting along on my Gathered Scarf (a free pattern from Skacel) with the new Silky Merino (in "Lettuce", a very pretty green):
.......when I had to put it down for a few days. I picked it back up yesterday and my stitch count was off. By 10 stitches. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out what had happened.
I undid a few rows to see if something went wrong on the decrease row. Didn't find anything. Stitch count still 10 off. The I undid a whole repeat to see if something went wrong on the increase row. Nothing. Stil 10 off. I came to the conclusion that I must have been knitting the pattern wrong the whole time! Frustrated about having to start over, but resigned, I ripped back the whole scarf (I had done approximately 90 rows).
About 5 rows before it became only a ball of yarn again.... it hit me. The realization and the horrible sinking feeling. I HAD CAST ON FEWER STITCHES SINCE MY YARN WAS HEAVIER THAN THE PATTERN CALLED FOR!!!!!! I was supposed to be "10 stitches off". I forgot to make a note of that on my pattern notes. So much had been going on this week, with getting ready for the American Cancer Society function and various other things, I didn't think once about that scarf until I came to knit it again. And here I was, trying to merrily follow a pattern that I had changed and didn't remember I had done so.
WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN!!!!!!!!
P.S. Despite this, I really really really love the yarn and the fabric it is creating in this scarf is just wonderfully soft. A better picture to come once I've got something to show (again).
